On display at The ICAMus Studio in Ann Arbor: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Overture to a Fairy Tale [Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Op. 108; composed in 1940], NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Arturo Toscanini, V-Disc No. 607B, 78rpm recording, 1945. A much-appreciated new gift received from award-winning exhibitions curator, archivist, and lecturer, Bill Doggett, a valued member of the ICAMus Board of Advisors. Toscanini conducted the NBC Symphony in the première recording of the 1940 Overture on 25 November 1945 in New York, under the title Overture to a Fairy Tale; this score remained unpublished until 1978.
Bill Doggett is an African American race and early sound specialist; his Early Sound Archive is dedicated to ideas of race and the African American presence in early recorded sound (1900-1940).
In 2015, ICAMus established a special partnership with Bill Doggett Productions, LLC (Lectures, Exhibitions, Advocacy of African-American Music and Musicians; Bill Doggett, founder and director).
