Dr. Douglas Hedwig is an American composer, trumpeter, conductor, scholar, and music educator, who recently (August 2023) donated to ICAMus his extensive personal archive of compositions, sketches, recordings, documenting his extraordinary musical career as a composer and performer. A selection of the Douglas Hedwig Collection will be on display at our American Music Center in Prato, Italy; the entire Collection will remain accessible for study and research.

THE COLLECTION

Dr. Douglas Hedwig’s donation began in February 2017, when ICAMus received a first selection of his CDs. Now the donated music scores, recordings and publications that he has produced constitute an outstanding complete Archive. We are committed to the preservation of the Collection, to making it accessible to researchers and students, and displaying it at the Center. Our objective is to encourage the study and performance of Dr. Hedwig’s compositions, and to promote the international resonance of his work.

Dr. Douglas Hedwig’s Collection donated to ICAMus consists of: music scores, both published and unpublished, including sketches and other preparatory materials; CDs, including recordings of Douglas Hedwig’s own compositions, and his performances as an instrumentalist and member of prestigious orchestras; books, booklets and concert programs; memorabilia and miscellany collection.

Alongside published and unpublished scores and parts, with sketches, drafts, notes, fragments, work-in-progress, and alternate versions, the Collection includes: parts and scores related to specific premieres; hand notated ideas & sketches for various compositions; research materials; Julliard School syllabi, teaching materials, research and lecture materials; framed posters, citations, full-size conductor scores; Dr. Hedwig’s doctoral diploma from Juilliard; documents, programs, and information related to Dr. Hedwig’s teaching and activities at The Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College; materials related to Dr. Hedwig’s performance career; documents related to some of the 20^th-century composers who wrote works for Dr. Hedwig; jazz-related materials; works for trumpet composed for, dedicated to and/or premiered by Dr. Hedwig; technical studies for trumpet by various authors; publications by Dr. Hedwig as music critic; photographs.

PREMIERES OF WORKS BY DOUGLAS HEDWIG IN THE ICAMus PROGRAMS.

Dr. Hedwig’s Hodie Canamus II for SABT Choir & Organ (2018/2023) was premiered in the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista-Chiesa dell’Autostrada, Campi Bisenzio-Florence, Italy on December 1^st, 2023, in a concert presented by Fondazione Arte Sacra Contemporanea under the auspices of ICAMus:

AMERICAN COMPOSERS FROM THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. Lucia Baldacci, organist and music director. Vocal Ensemble Estro Armonico Fiorentino. Art historian Giovanni Guidetti introduced the modern architecture by Giovanni Michelucci; Lucia Baldacci provided a musicological introduction to the program. 

The program also included rarely performed organ works by Romantic composer Anthony Philip Heinrich (1781-1861) and two pieces by contemporary composer Jerome N. Margolis: Alleluiah for Choir & Organ (from Unison Mass; 1973) and Sectional Resonance for the Organ (2019; dedicated to Lucia Baldacci).

Douglas Hedwig’s Journey Al(l)one for solo violin,  “Dedicated to Aloma Bardi, Artistic Director, International Center for American Music, Prato, Italy,” will be premiered by Alberto Bologni on May 18, 2024, at the much-anticipated opening of our new American Music Center (Centro di Documentazione sulla Musica Americana) in Palazzo Martini-Palazzo della Musica, Prato, Italy.
